Watermelon tips

How-To Gal has a great post about how to pick the perfect watermelon. There were several things I did not know about when looking for a watermelon, and it was always hit or miss on the sweetness. Now I think I'll be able to bring home a perfect one each time. Hope you find this helpful as well.

Eat your vegetables!

They are really good for you!

Garden Markers

We are finally clear of frost!!! So today we are going to prep the garden and get the seeds ready to plant tomorrow (my in-laws say to soak them overnight before planting).

In preparation for the garden I made these garden markers. I gathered some rocks from the yard and painted them. Pretty easy. I would recommend using a black sharpie for the lettering, unless you're great with painting and have a really thing paintbrush. It could even be vinyl for those with the fancy Cricuts.

Lace Flower

Found this pretty hair pin made by Aly&Ash and I love it. It's on my to do list!

Grocery List Week 2

Download your week 2 grocery list here.

In blue are items I have leftover from the week before. Since I had to buy a lot of items in  "bulk" like bread or wraps and only used a few I didn't need to buy them for this week.

Hope this helps.

I have lost....

.....5 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!

I weighed myself last week before I started, and this morning I was down 5 lbs. And I still have two more days left in week one!

So far I am loving the LBN diet because I don't feel like I'm dieting. My husband isn't the biggest fan because his favorite meals include A LOT of carbs, cheese and sauce. No wonder I am fat, because I eat like him. When we lived together for the first time in college I gained 15 lbs in under 2 months. It was shocking. I wasn't pigging out, but I was eating what he was. And when you're broke anyways, you buy the cheap stuff which happens to be a lot of Totino's frozen pizza and spaghetti.

Healthy Yogurt Parfait

I am really enjoying this "diet." I actually don't feel like I'm dieting, just eating healthy food. This is exactly what I needed. A meal plan showing me how to incorporate all the healthy veggies and portions in great combinations. I love that I don't have to take a bazillion vitamins, or supplement bars/shakes or anything out of the box. And the best part is it's teaching me how to use Flax Seed and Wheat Germ in everyday foods. Even Emma is liking the foods and that makes me really happy.

This morning we had yogurt with almonds, wheat germ and mango mixed in. It was supposed to be plain yogurt, but I have tried to force it down in the past and I just can't so I used organic vanilla yogurt. It was VERY yummy. And Emma liked it too.

Bird Seed Tree

Under the Table and Dreaming created this wonderful Bird Seed Tree. What a fantastic idea!!!

How I cook Artichokes

I first cut off the stem and a little off the top (sharp, pointy ends).

Then I fill up a microwaveable bowl with a few inches of water, place artichoke face up in water and cover with saran wrap. Next I place in microwave and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes. Cook until you can pull a leaf off with just a  little tug (should be easy to do).

Careful when you remove from bowl, it will be very hot. My friend and I like to eat with Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing as dip. Yummy.

Almond Chicken Dijon

This is one of my favorite chicken recipes.

The recipe from Kraft Foods says to use low-fat mayo, but you could also use plain yogurt or even just the Dijon mustard if you want. I LOVE mustard more than mayo, so I normally do 2 parts mustard to 1 part mayo. The mayo does help to make it a little more creamier, but isn't completely necessary. Then sprinkle the top with chopped or slivered almonds and bake.

The chicken comes out sooooo moist with lots of flavor, and even great as leftovers.

Love the feel of this

I got this email from Terrain today, and just love the this feels. I wish my whole backyard could look like this. Too bad hubby doesn't like this whimsical, cottage feel.

New Blog for Weight Loss

I decided that I didn't want to hog up this blog with daily weight loss journals, tips and findings. I want to keep this my craft, design and family blog with updates to my weight loss progress.

I have created a new blog called Bailey's Belly Battle for the sake of keeping daily journals, rants and raves and how/what I'm doing. If you want to check in daily please feel free, otherwise check here at Doehler Days for a weekly recap of what/how I did.

LBN - The Beginning

Well, I officially start tomorrow.

In the book their is a two-day prep option that you can do before the actual diet begins. I couldn't do it today, I still had to go to the store and get some items, so I am doing a one-day prep on Sunday which consist of a healthy shake in the morning, and eating protein and green veggies throughout the day. I will begin the 6-week plan on Monday.

For your convenience (and mine) I have made a week 1 grocery list of EVERYTHING you will need. A lot is bought in a package. So for week one you may need only 2 whole-wheat wraps but you'll have to buy the whole package. You will use more throughout the 6 weeks. Week 1 seems like you buy a lot, but you won't need to buy some things later on. I have also put some notes in red to help you, or if I made a substitution. Also, if you don't know what Quinoa [keen-wah] is, it's a grain like rice. I found it in the isle next to couscous and the organic mac n cheese (at King Soopers). And it's super delicious!

You can download the Excel file here.

Wish me luck!

I cannot wait for the Eclipse movie! It was my favorite book and I am so excited to see the movie. Although I am super excited, I won't be seeing it opening night. I'm not a big fan of loud movie goers, and I know girls will be screaming (I'll be screaming on the inside).

Springtime in the Rockies

Well, technically I'm in the flatlands of the Rockies, but I do have a great view of them. I am constantly surprised when people are surprised that we get snow in May. I know it's a bit of a weather shock, but it happens every year.

I moved from California to Colorado when I was 10 and we were so excited to have snow. My birthday is in December, and my mom kept talking about how we could have a sledding party for my birthdays or go ice know...winter activities. Well, it doesn't snow much in December, oddly. But every year on my mom's birthday, May 1st, we get snow (sometimes it's a few days off). We have pictures of us on my mom's birthday sledding, building snowmen and doing snow angels. When I graduated from college, it snowed on May 5th. It was hot that week before, so no one planned ahead, and we couldn't fit that many people we still had the ceremony outside in the blowing snow. It was crazy! Then a few years ago, on my sisiters high school graduation (end of May) it was freezing and snowing so hard.

So, fellow Coloradans...don't be so shocked that it's snowing in May...start thinking it's the norm. You know it will be 80 next week. :)

Grilled Artichokes

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. I found this recipe this morning on Created by Diane, and just about started drooling. On her blog header her warning does say "Do not read this blog if you are hungry." That was my first mistake. But I seriously can not wait to try these! Head on over to see how you can make this yourself.

Look Better Naked (LBN) - Update

UPDATE to everyone! I will be starting the diet this weekend (May 15th). My household was really busy this last week and weekend and I could finish reading the book and get my planning done. But I WILL be starting soon.

Thanks for all the support.

This week I will be posting a grocery list for the first week. That is one thing I wish the book had was a complete list of grocery items I need for the program. But it doesn't, so I will be making this and providing it to anyone who wants it. But it's just taking some time.

Little People Birthday Chart

How fun is this??!!! I think my grandma would love this. She has 6 kids and 18 grandkids, and 1 great-grandkid, and this would be a cute way to keep track. Go to Poppies at Play to see this tutorial by A Little Bit of This n That.

Flower Redo

I was given flowers early last week, and today I noticed how sad they were looking. So I gave them a little redo.

From sad:

To fab:
I saved the jars from artichoke hearts, and they make the perfect vase.

Remember These?

I found these at the Dollar Spot in Target and I couldn't resist. I remember doing this when I was little, along with Shrinky Dinks, and knew Emma would love to do this. It's a quick and easy thing to do, but keeps Emma occupied long enough to do some chore...or dishes. Have fun, and don't forget that it's okay to not just play with your kids but be a kid yourself sometimes.

Look Better Naked

I saw this book on my morning news and it really spoke to me. So I ordered it from here, and it arrived yesterday. I've already read half way through it. It's an easy read and it is really interesting. I know any diet works if you just stick to it, and that is half the battle. Life gets in the way. But this book lays out everything you will need. A complete meal guide for 6 weeks and all the work out moves you need. Not only does it have a weight loss plan, but it has tips for boosting your confidence, and tips for healthy skin, hair and nails. It also has built-in "cheats" and 2 glasses of wine or a special cocktail once a week. So far, I like what I'm reading.

If you would like to join me on this journey for the next 6 weeks, go pick up your book. I'll be starting this on Saturday (there is a 2-day prep and the meal plans start on a Monday), and posting updates about this weight loss adventure.

My goal in the next 6 weeks is to lose 30 lbs. I have a lot more than that, but this is where I am starting so that I don't overwhelm myself.

May 1, 2010

My grandma's 80th birthday is coming up in October and we are trying to plan it.

My grandma is a loving woman who loves the lord, her 6 children and 18 grandchildren. You can see the Save the Date here.

I was wondering if you might have some suggestions. Colors, games, decor, etc...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
